My house, my garden, my woods, my town. This is my patch, and I know it like the back of my hand. But the eight films in the Kurzes für Kids programme throw the doors wide open and let the whole world in.
Right ON THE MAT OUTSIDE MY DOOR, there’s a blonde rat standing every single day. And if it rhymes, it must be fine? Not a bit of it! This houseguest simply keeps inviting himself in. There isn’t a single minute of peace anymore – whether you’re brushing your teeth, listening to music, or even having a nap. But wouldn’t the house feel just a little too empty without this cheeky guest?
A tiny hamster takes a timid step into a mysterious house. The floor there is soft and grassy, something he’s never known in the bleak world outside. Together with his new pal – a giant creature made of climbing vines – he wants to make everything colourful and full of life again. (LE PETIT ET LE GÉANT)
A first step into the unknown also turns into a great adventure for three baby birds. A brief hesitation, a brave hop, a cautious glide, and suddenly the sky begins to swirl and they’re taking their FIRST FLIGHT.
“What on earth are you doing?” “Can’t you see? We’re launching a space programme.” A group of children wants to go even higher, right into the depths of outer space. That’s HARDLY ROCKET SCIENCE.
Back on Earth, the branches are groaning, the woods are creaking, and dark grey clouds hang over the trees. A deep, wooden note hums through the thicket. It is a melody from a blossoming magic flute, breathing life back into the WOODLAND with its warmth.
Elsewhere, the brassy sound of a saxophone mingles with the clinking and clanking of machinery. The locomotive on LINE 12 improvises the rhythm of the rails like a jazz musician, taking us along on an adventurous train journey.
Another train rattles towards Berlin; three siblings are on board. But who can find the words to tell the youngest brother that their parents are separating and Dad won’t be joining them? (SOME THINGS CAN’T WAIT)
And Yuna has THE WEIGHT OF CHERRIES in her tummy because her best friend has moved away. Everything feels heavy at first. But a new friend helps to chase the sadness away – regardless of whether they are real or imaginary.
After the screening, it’s time to vote: the children act as the jury to decide which film wins the Audience Award.
