Animation Special

A pink rabbit giggles and frolics, submerged up to its long ears in fluffy cotton-wool foam. But suddenly, the mood shifts. “Don’t look at me like that!” the creature demands with empowered insistence. It claws first at its artificial shell, then at its own skin—the skin it feels so uncomfortable in. It is not, and does not want to be, as cute as it appears to us. It isn’t there for us, the audience. But who needs whom here? Does the audience need the harmless entertainment of a playful rabbit – or does the bunny need the gaze of others? A vicious CYCLE OF VIOLENCE.

An intimate moment, an embrace, a drawing closer, a kiss. You’re newly in love; you want to reveal your innermost self to one another. And suddenly, you MUST get your “innermost” out. Not the burgeoning feelings, however, but a poorly digested lunch. Lovemaking becomes a battle between the gut and the heart. The way to the heart is indeed through the stomach, right up to the explosive end. It’s “Guts with Glamour”. (MAMBO NO. 2)

CARIES looks at life from the bacteria’s point of view. We witness the existential struggle of tiny bacteria in the hostile environment of the mouth. They painstakingly gather the smallest scraps of food for their meagre meal, while their host lazily lets himself be served a finely cooked soup by his host. Naive cave paintings in black upon the tooth wall bear witness to an early civilisation, yet even this primal art form goes unappreciated. One thing is clear: Caries and Baktus would never have made it this far without human support.

It’s enough to make your skin crawl; entrails writhe to the rhythm and teeth chatter to the beat. In the 11 films of this animation special, lines and shapes take on human traits and expose our innermost selves.
